From time to time, I was asked by people who have already learned some foreign language: how to learn a foreign language?

Nowadays, almost everyone has learnt or is learning some foreign language so as to use it in some special occasions. And I know they definitely know how to learn a foreign language as long as they know how to learn business, mathematics or chemistry- they are nothing different from each other as a kind knowledge. They have their respective system and must be learnt step by step. Those who asked how to learn a foreign language are asking for a method or shortcut to improve their foreign language proficiency.

No shortcut. We need to learn a foreign language in the same way of learning mathematics. We need collect information, experiment with theories and practice as much as possible, in order to master knowledge of any subject, including language. If to say effectiveness, the most effective way to learn a foreign language include at least three steps: reading, writing and translating.

Reading

Reading is the most basic step to learn a language. No matter how well you have been able to use a language, you can always something you can read. To read is like to collect information. While trying to understand what others try to tell you in their writings, you analyze the sentence structure, look up a dictionary for unfamiliar words and meet plenty of examples for the grammar you have learned. The more you read, the more information of a language you collect, the more you will be able to read.

Writing

Like experimenting to prove a theory, writing gives you chance to experiment with all you have learned about a language. By using what you’ve learnt in writing an article can always test how well and how much you have learnt about the language.

Translating

This is a practice part of learning a language. Never be afraid of translating. Just try your best to understand and turn what you read into your own language or turn what written in your language to a foreign language. During the process, you need to try your best to apply all you have leaned to what you are trying to translate. And after you finish a translation, you will just find your proficiency has improved more than a little.
